We “know where Barthel gets the cider”! Granted, the easiest explanation for our name is the shortening of our family name “Barthelmes”. But why keep it simple when it can be so complicated? We are located on the old site of the chapel of St. Martin, which was built in the year 752. At that time, must and grapes were goods for trade and barter and were stored as wine in the innumerable wine cellars located below the farms. Unfortunately, the chapel did not survive the following centuries, and the property, including the guesthouse, became the property of the Barthelmes family in 1957. Fortunately, however, a relic from the past has remained with us to this day: our vaulted cellar from the 12th century. There are many possible interpretations of the saying “know where Barthel gets its cider”. Our favorite, however, is to know where you can get the best wine, and that is most definitely in our beautiful region of Lower Franconia.
